Why Enroll in Puppy Classes?

Meet Wendy on SVHtube!

Great for shy pups – helps them gain confidence & decrease fear.

Great for pushy pups – helps them learn self-control & how to politely interact with others

Fun for the whole family! Well-behaved children are welcome to observe & may be asked to participate with a few activities.

A wonderful way to strengthen your bond! The more rewarding experiences your puppy shares
with you, the more he/she will want to be with you.

About the Trainer

Wendy Hazenstab, CVT, earned an Associate Degree for Animal Health Technology from Harcum
College in 1987. After passing the Pennsylvania State Board Exam, she received her title of PA
Certified Veterinary Technician. Since then, Wendy has worked almost continuously as a veterinary
technician for various small animal veterinary hospitals in Pennsylvania. In July 2005 she began
working for the Shiloh Veterinary Hospital as the practice manager.

A keen interest in canine behavior led Wendy to attend many behavior and training seminars in the
past 5 years as well as read as much as she can on the subject. Some of the classes include:

  • Canine Body Language & Communication, Wolf Park, Battle Ground, IN: July 2006
  • DOGS! Course at the University of Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine: April 2007
  • Instructor's Training Course in Accord, NY, taught by Pia Silvani and Sue Sternberg: May 2008
Wendy and her husband share their home with 2 adopted dogs: Timber, a 9 year old golden
retriever and Maddie, a 6 year old border collie mix.

Puppy Classes Now Available!

Puppy Pre-School – For Ages 7-12 Weeks
Learn how to properly socialize your young pup and help him/her develop into a well-adjusted, happy
adult dog. Dogs who have been properly socialized as pups learn to accept changes well, enjoy
having new experiences, and are less likely to become fearful or aggressive toward people & other
animals. They also learn self control and have a great foundation to be overall great family pets!
Take advantage of this early learning period & help your puppy develop into an awesome dog!

Pups are exposed to new experiences in a pleasant, non-threatening environment. No punishment or
‘corrections’ are ever used in this class. Details:
  • Classes at our Manchester area office are Thursdays at 6:00 pm
  • This class is given in an ongoing 4-week format. Puppies may begin any week & continue for 4 weeks. Please arrive 20 minutes early on your first night for an introductory discussion.
Puppy Kindergarten – For Ages 14-24 Weeks

At this age, puppies are in their ‘Juvenile Period’ of development, which is similar to our teen years.
This is a time of rapid growth, increased activity & excitability, and increased independence.
Puppies in the juvenile period need consistent leadership (not to be confused with ‘dominance’), lots
of daily exercise, and training with positive reinforcement. This can be a frustrating time for
owners, which is a great reason to take your pup to classes!

Learn to capture your puppy’s attention and begin the foundation training for a lifetime of canine
manners! No punishment or ‘corrections’ are ever used in this class. Details:
  • Classes at our Manchester area office are Tuesdays at 6:00 pm
  • Classes to be announced soon.
Pre-requisites (for both classes)
  • DHLPP and Bordetella vaccines must be given at least 10 days prior to the first day of class.
  • Proof of a negative stool sample and/or treatment for parasites
  • Need to have had a wellness exam by a veterinarian and be free of fleas and contagious diseases.

NEW CLASS: What is K9 Nose Work™?

K9 Nose Work™ is a fun activity for dogs and owners designed around your dog’s natural scenting ability and desire to hunt. It provides mental enrichment, helps increase confidence, and is just a lot of fun for dogs! It also gives you the opportunity to learn more about and appreciate your dog’s amazing “scent-ability”.

What do you teach a dog in these classes?

Dogs are already extremely capable of finding things with their noses, so we don’t actually have to teach that. In the beginner classes, class instructors and handlers (that’s you) set up many different situations for dogs to hunt for rewards with increasing levels of challenge. In the advanced stages, dogs are taught to search for tiny hints of odor, and are always rewarded at the end of each hunt. It’s amazing to see how the dogs get excited about hunting even in their first class!

What kind of dog can participate in K9 Nose Work™ classes?

One great thing about this activity is that it’s suitable for any dog and any person, no matter what their physical ability may be. All breeds of all ages are welcome, and even dogs who are reactive to other dogs or people can join a class. Most dog activities & sports, such as agility, flyball, and rally obedience, are not typically suitable for dogs who are reactive to other dogs. But Nose Work can open up a whole new world of enrichment for these dogs!! Dogs work off-leash in class so only one dog works at a time. All others are crated in a calm room until their turn comes around again. This is so the working dog has no distractions outside of the “sniff zone”.
